Rachael Ray Dog Food
The Rachael Ray Dog Food line features dry kibble, wet dog food and treats. It is manufactured by Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, which is a large company that makes a range of pet foods. Rachael Ray is marketed as a super premium brand.
The dried dog food is made from real meat and vegetables, with added vitamins and minerals, and with no artificial preservatives, flavors or poultry by-product meal. The wet food is a range of stews made from meat and vegetables, which are free from corn, wheat and soy, and do not contain artificial fillers or flavors.
Rachael Ray currently has ten dry dog foods – two new Dish recipes, four Nutrish recipes, three Zero Grain recipes and one Just 6 recipe.
Dish Dog Food
There are two flavors in the Rachael Ray Dish range – Chicken and Brown Rice, and Beef and Brown Rice. The main ingredient is real chicken or beef that has been raised on US farms and isn’t imported. This will appeal to dog owners who like to know the origins of their pet’s food. It also includes dried pieces of real fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, peas, potatoes and apples, although some dog owners feel there should be more bits of vegetables in the kibble.
Dish is free from corn, wheat, soy and gluten, but does contain added ingredients to get the best balance of nutrients for dogs, including fish oil, vitamins and chelated minerals. The Beef formula does include chicken pieces, so owners of dogs with allergies or sensitivities to chicken protein should be aware of this.
In reviews many dog owners report that their dogs enjoy eating Dish. People who want their dog to eat a diet of natural ingredients are more likely to choose this brand.
Nutrish Dog Food
Rachael Ray’s Nutrish range of dry dog food features four different flavors – Real Chicken and Veggies, Turkey, Brown Rice and Venison, Real Beef and Brown Rice, Real Turkey and Veggies. The main ingredient in each is US farm-raised meat or poultry, although the venison is imported from New Zealand.
The Real Chicken and Veggies and Real Beef and Brown Rice recipes contain real vegetables and added vitamins, minerals and natural prebiotics. Both Turkey recipes have added L-Carnitine which can help support a healthy metabolism. The Real Turkey and Veggies kibble contains 25% less fat and 10% fewer calories than the Real Chicken and Veggies recipe, so is designed to be a better choice for adult dogs that need to watch their weight. It should be noted that the kibble in the Nutrish range does contain corn and soy, which are ingredients that some dog owners wish to avoid.
Many owners report that their dogs love eating Nutrish, but some have raised concerns that the mix of ingredients looks to contain more rice than veggies. People who would prefer their dog to eat a high protein, low carbohydrate diet may select a different super premium brand.
Zero Grain Dog food
As the name indicates, the Nutrish Zero Grain range of kibble contains zero grains, glutens or fillers, as well as no poultry by-product meal. It is also free from artificial flavors, colors and artificial preservatives. The different flavor choices are Turkey and Potato, Beef, Potato and Bison, and Salmon and Sweet Potato.
There are many reviews from dog owners reporting that their dogs’ skin problems have disappeared since they switched to Zero Grain, the itching and red eyes caused by allergies have gone and their dogs’ coats look shinier.
Dog owners looking for a dry dog food that is suitable for their dog with allergies or food sensitivities may discover Rachael Ray’s Zero Grain kibble is the best food for their dog.
Just 6 Dog Food
Just 6 Lamb Meal and Brown Rice dog food is made from a recipe of “just 6” limited ingredients. Lamb meal is the main one, followed by brown rice, ground rice, beet pulp, natural chicken flavour and poultry fat. In addition to these natural ingredients there are added vitamins and chelated minerals, but absolutely no corn, wheat, soy or gluten.
In reviews many dog owners say the issues associated with their dogs’ food sensitivities and allergies have cleared after switching to Just 6, such as stomach issues and itching. So dogs who require a limited diet may find this kibble suits them.
How does Rachael Ray dog food compare to other super premium brands?
It should be noted that there are generally a lot more ingredients in Rachael Ray dog food than in some of the other expensive dog food brands. Dog owners who believe their dog should follow a mainly carnivorous diet, or a low carb and protein-rich diet, may be deterred by the fairly average animal protein content of the recipes and the inclusion of carbohydrates such as rice or potatoes near the top of the ingredients listings. Although the real meat from US farms is a better ingredient than imported meat of unknown origin, and the ingredients are safe for dogs to consume, the dog food isn’t suitable for human consumption, whereas some super premium brands are.
The Zero Grain and Just 6 recipes are perhaps the best in the dry food range, as they are aimed at dogs with allergies and sensitivities. So overall, although Rachael Ray may not be the very best dog food available, it does have many good attributes that make it appealing to dog owners.
